Before coming back to Texas, I worked with the disaster response ministry of the Louisiana Conference of the UMC. I saw first-hand how funding and support can help change lives. Click over today to make a difference and support US Disaster Response!
Day 8: US Disaster Response
October 17th, 2011
Responding when a disaster in the United States overwhelms a community’s ability to recover on its own.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) provides training to annual conferences and local churches on disaster preparation and response. UMCOR’s partner, United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM), provides an important source of volunteers.
When disaster strikes, the local church usually provides the first response. Understanding that disaster response is local helps UMCOR form a foundation for national training and response. Through its partnerships, UMCOR arrives immediately to provide advice, counseling, and mentoring, always responding at the invitation of and through the local annual conference.
Through local partners, UMCOR works to set up a long-term response to disasters. Case managers advocate for survivors, walking them through the complicated maze of insurance and FEMA applications, and connecting with Volunteer-In-Mission teams to obtain recovery assistance.
